The Evolution of My Naturopathic and Homeopathic Practice

Most of you know me as a homeopathic doctor. I love homeopathy, am board-certified in that specialty, have co-written 8 books on the subject, and have taught internationally!

But many of you current patients do not know about my other skills and expertise in naturopathic medicine! Let me give you a little history:

• I originally happened about a natural lifestyle when I was 23 years old and was introduced to yoga. At that time, like many of my contemporaries, I became a vegetarian. No one talked about veganism at that time, but I didn’t eat meat or fish, and it wasn’t nearly as difficult in the 70s and 80s to find organic food without preservatives and pesticides. I remained a vegetarian for 18 years. Bob (Dr. Ullman) was also vegetarian. We were seeing patients four days a week, eating out a lot, and we started eating chicken and fish, and a little beef. That has continued to this day.

• I taught classes in raw foods, fasting, healthy eating for the backpacker, stress management for years. I included diet diaries in my patient intakes, led guided fasts, made Ayurvedic recommendations, and used a variety of counseling and hypnosis techniques for many years. In fact, what led me to becoming a naturopathic and homeopathic doctor was my work with psychiatric patients as an M.S.W. psychiatric social worker. I promised myself that I could find an alternative to psychiatric medications!

• Our clinic, The Northwest Center for Holistic Medicine In Seattle (1986-93) was the first holistic clinic in Seattle and we were columnists for The New Times.” When the clinic building was destined to be torn down to make room for a condo, we moved to our beautiful Edmonds clinic, which we enjoyed for 17 years, and changed our name to The Northwest Center for Homeopathic Medicine.” We were very involved teaching at the International Foundation for Homeopathy at the time.

• Specializing in homeopathy, I spent less time helping patients with diet, counseling, and lifestyle (before I did blood draws, vaginal exams, and more). I found that, in order to be the best possible homeopathic doctor, I needed to devote at least 75% of my practice to homeopathic appointments. Personally, I continued, as always to eat and cook as organically as possible, to raise an organic garden (have, most of the time, since 1973), exercise regularly, take nutritional supplements, and maintain a strong personal spiritual practice. And I used all of these tools to stay healthy and vibrant despite two mastectomies and having half of my thyroid removed (that was 22 years ago and I have never needed thyroid supplementation)!

• I often counsel my long-term patients, in the context of a homeopathic appointment. But most of you don’t know that I love to be a guide or coach for my patients in that way. I call it being a mirror or cheerleader.

• In addition, I do make dietary, nutritional supplement, and laboratory testing recommendations to my homeopathic patients when time allows. But, often, homeopathy takes up the full appointment with most of you.

Expanding My Practice: Naturopathic Visits

• I had a conversation recently with one of my patients whom I originally saw while a student at the Bastyr Clinic! I have seen her for 38 years! She wondered why she needed to go to a different ND to find out about supplements and get feedback on her lab tests if I’m an ND. It got me to thinking that I would be happy, once again, to expand my practice and make nutritional, diet, exercise, and lifestyle recommendations, in addition to exclusively homeopathy. You may not be aware that I can also offer natural health travel consultations (having traveled to ~50 countries and written The Savvy Traveler)!

• The world has changed dramatically, especially over the past 10 years). Not only is it vital to continue educating ourselves about how to shop, eat, and cook naturally. And about which products to use in our homes that are free of chemicals and pesticides. But, also to stay current with how to protect ourselves, to whatever degree possible, from EMFs (electromagnetic radiation), which will become far more important if 5G is rolled out. I can help advise you about these.

• Now that I am expanding my natural pharmacy, you can benefit from specific recommendations for you and your families.

• For my senior patients, I have become quite knowledgeable, over the past couple of years, about end-of-life issues.
I love homeopathy more than ever! But I have more to offer, if you would like my help and experience! My fees for homeopathic visits will remain the same as they have for many years, although I am offering a 90-minute retake to Dr. Ullman’s patients at the fee of 30 minutes so they can switch to my practice without a financial hardship.
If you have laboratory tests and want me to take a look at them to make naturopathic recommendations, you will need to email them to me ahead of time. You may want to make a naturopathic appointment once a year to review and update the lifestyle, diet, and supplement recommendations. I just ask that you be realistic as to how much time we need so we can do it in one visit.
