Infertility, Endometriosis, Severe PMS, and Morning Sickness
Conventional medicine offers surgery and menopause-inducing drugs to women with endometriosis. We have been quite successful in treating endometriosis, and the often-resulting infertility, with homeopathy. We offer Lucy’s case as an example of how gentle yet powerfully effective homeopathy can be. You can also read Lucy’s story and comments, as well as many more, in my book, Whole Woman Homeopathy: Safe, Effective, Natural Alternatives to Drugs, Hormones and Surgery.
Lucy’s Story
Lucy, age 29, came to us initially for help with endometriosis. She had undergone Laparoscopic surgery a year and a half earlier to remove endometrial tissue in the area of the rectum and tailbone. Lucy had been infertile for the previous three years and wanted very much to have a child. She had miscarried three and a half years earlier. She had an alcohol problem during that pregnancy but was now sober.
Lucy told her story as follows: “My PMS is ridiculous. I get really critical and do not tolerate other people’s imperfections. I try not to take it out on others, but inside I’m convinced that they’re idiots! I can’t stand t the way my husband breathes. I snap at him and tell him to give me my space.”
“My PMS is terrible: I have massive water retention. My eyelids get puffy, and my abdomen bloats. My breasts become terribly sore and my uterus feels heavy–like a rock. I get low back pain and it feels like all the blood had been drawn out of my back. I also feel a sharp pain inside my rectum then, and also when I bear down during a bowel movement. My periods are regular now. At that time, I flowed heavily for three or four days. I had to put in a tampon every hour or two. My periods are okay now, except my uterus hurts when I put in a tampon.”
“I was bulimic for about five years from 19 to 25. I didn’t have any periods for four of those years. During the bulimia I only ate a small amount of cottage cheese every day. Then I vomited at night. From age 21 to 26 I drank all day. I started drinking when I was 17. I drank hard liquor for the first four years, then cheap white wine. I would drink half a gallon in two days.”
“My knees get sore. I can only stand in one spot without moving for about five minutes. I have to crack my knees often. It’s hard to sit in movies or a car. I’ve been this way ever since I was 12. My knees ache the day before it rains, and I can’t crawl around on them on the floor. My wrists get weak when I lift or twist anything.”
“I’m chilly. My hands and feet are always cold, but hot weather makes me cranky. I can’t handle cold, damp weather. I broke my ankle about five years ago. When it snows, it still really hurts.”
Lucy had been diagnosed with anemia beginning at age 12 and often had to take iron. Upon further questioning, she informed us that her ankle fracture did not heal quickly. During cold, snowy weather, it felt as if an ice cube were sitting in the middle of her foot exactly where it was fractured. She had also suffered from severe nosebleeds from childhood until the age of 22. She also had a tendency to bruise easily as well as recurrent dental cavities while growing up.
Lucy was terrified of spiders, to the point of sweating, shaking, and felt paralyzed even seeing a spider on television. She feared that her husband would leave her, and could become quite jealous, even though he gave her no reason to mistrust him.
Towards the end of the case taking, Lucy remarked that she experienced tremendous trauma at 12 years of age when her parents separated. “It was horrible for me. My world blew apart. There were four of us. That’s when I started doing drugs. I quit high school in my senior year and got my G.E.D. My father is still alcoholic. My mother is from an alcoholic family. All three of my siblings are in recovery.”
Lucy’s Response to Homeopathy
We prescribed Calcarea phosphorica 200C (calcium phosphate) for Lucy, based on the recurrent symptoms from a previous fracture, persistent knee pain, wrist weakness, anemia, dental caries, premenstrual symptoms, and trauma resulting from bad news.
At her five-week follow-up visit, she reported that, surprisingly, her recent period had been free of PMS symptoms, both physical and emotional. Sex was pain-free. The shooting rectal pain was gone. She hadn’t had such an easy period in years. “Is this too good to be true?” Her husband couldn’t believe it either. Nor had she gained her usual five to seven pounds before her period. She had absolutely no premenstrual irritability. Her knees were a little better. Her energy was increased. She felt less jealous. This was a wonderful response to the Calcarea phosphorica.
When we saw Lucy again, four and a half months after her first appointment, her main complaint was nausea of pregnancy! This was a cause for celebration since she had been trying unsuccessfully to become pregnant for some time! She was very excited about being pregnant, but felt miserable with flu-like nausea beginning the moment she woke up in the morning. “I feel like I’m going to die”. Some of Lucy’s previous symptoms had recurred, including her irritability, impatience with her husband, sharp rectal pain, and low back pain. She even experienced, once again, a twinge of jealousy for the first time since the taking the initial dose of the calcium phosphate. We repeated the remedy.
Lucy called a week later to say she was feeling much less nauseous and irritable.
Her pregnancy continued happily and she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. We continued to treat Lucy for a number of years. She eventually needed Theridion, a homeopathic remedy made from the orange spider, which is indicated in patients, like Lucy, with extreme noise sensitivity to the point of painfulness. We also treated her daughter successfully for a number of years.
